And the lightness I felt in The Lost City was still with me, two days later, as, I strolled, from Minca, back to the Jaguar Project. I was listening, again, to Antony de Mello’s Awareness. (God I love that man! I only just found out he died, suddenly, in his 50s, and his work was banned by the Pope. This of course makes me love him all the more. You’ve got to be doing something right, if you’re banned by the pope.) On the audiobook, de Mello was saying,
‘You become happy not by being loved, my dears – which means by being desired. You become happy by contact with reality’.
And I agreed. I was delighted to be in contact with nature. Nothing calms like trees and bird song and gentle flowing water.
It all seemed enough. It seemed more than enough. After all….
‘Living on thrills,’ de Mello was saying, ‘is like feeding a racehorse on cake’.
