HOW TO SAVE THE WORLD (and find yourself on the way) - Part 1
What do you, when walking in the jungle, you encounter a beast?
Now that the whole trip’s almost done – the storm-crossed Atlantic crossing, the week in Haiti, groaning on that foul floor, the moments of pain and joy and actual transformation – it seems so obvious: I started out trying to save the world; I ended up learning how to be happy. How to cope. And now I can.
For example… Last week. Colombian Mountains. Doing the long trek back from Minca to the Jaguar Project, I was tip-toeing along a high wall. To the left, flowed a canal; to the right, a sheer, massive drop to the jungle.
I was literally just wondering, Is this safe?, when, rounding a big tree, I saw, lapping at the water, a long, brown-and-white furred creature.
Is it a jaguar? Will it attack?
Of course these questions shot fast through my head, but actually – still elated from having just uncovered my own dirty secret - I felt calm. I’d trained for this. I’d wanted it. I knew what to do.
