It was Spanish Paula who first saw the dolphins.  Here she is…

The day after the spotting,  I encounter her as she stops steering.   I’m very interested in her,  since the word is she was once captured by pirates,  a thing which - in Melville’s phrase - ‘rouses my whole curiosity’. I’m dying to get her to tell the whole story,  but she’s given no sign she’s happy to do it.  Paula is a very generous and sweet-natured person, I’ve found, but also proud person: she won’t do a thing, unless she wants to.
